Miri Air: Monitoring Today, Protecting Tomorrow

Miri Air, a product of Climate in Africa
Africa is undergoing rapid urbanization, making it the continent with the fastest-growing urban population on the planet. The population is expected to double within the next three decades. The result of this unplanned expansion is a silent emergency, increasing the risk of air pollution that threatens public health, economic productivity, and environmental sustainability. Yet, the reliable data to guide action has often been scarce [1].
“Miri Air is a modular, solar-powered, research-grade, and sensor-rich air quality and environmental monitoring device designed to provide real-time, high-precision environmental intelligence for government, researchers, industries, and communities to power decision making and disaster preparedness across Africa.”
Miri Air is Redefining Environmental Monitoring in Africa

Here's how;
- Real-time air quality tracking: Protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
- Urban insights for healthier city planning: Equip policymakers and city managers with reliable data to design cleaner, greener, and more resilient spaces.
- Disaster management support: Allows user to set thresholds and trigger early warnings when threshold for spikes are met
- Climate-smart development: Ensure policies, investments, and interventions are backed by credible, research-grade data.
- Actionable Insights: Through the Miri Platform, every device reading is enhanced with AI-powered forecasts, historical trend analysis, and predictive modeling, giving users the intelligence to move from raw data to informed action.
Inside Miri Air: The Technology Behind the Device

Miri Air is engineered for precision, durability, and sustainability. With just one device, you can monitor a wide range of environmental conditions that once required multiple instruments.
1. Sensor Suite
Miri Air provides comprehensive monitoring of:
- Particulate Matter: PM₂.₅, PM₁₀
- Gases: CO₂, CO, NO₂, O₃, SO₂, CH₄, VOCs, HCHO (formaldehyde)
- Meteorological Variables: Temperature, Humidity, Pressure
- Other environmental variable: Noise
2. Power & Connectivity
Miri Air is built to withstand the harsh African climate, and it has the ability to operate off-grid.
- Solar-Powered with Built-in Battery (12,000mAh Li-ion). Up to 3 days of backup during prolonged cloudy/rainy conditions.
- Low power consumption with an ultra-low-power processor
- Connectivity: 2G/4G LTE, BLE, GPS/BDS, cloud integration
- Data Access: Local storage + real-time cloud uploads
3. Deployment & Modularity
Miri Air is modular and easy to deploy, making it adaptable across diverse African environments.
- Simple installation with minimal infrastructure requirements
- Field-ready design for both urban centers and remote rural communities
- OTA (over-the-air) support for software updates and remote calibration
- Built for scaling; from single-site monitoring to nationwide networks
4. Hardware & Durability
- Compact and lightweight (≈2 kg) with ABS housing
- UV and rain-resistant, built for African terrains
- Wide operating range: -10°C to 85°C; 0–100% RH
- Modular design for easy deployment and maintenance
- OTA (over-the-air) updates and calibration support
5. Calibration & Accuracy
- Miri Air’s sensors are calibrated against regional certified reference standards
- Miri Air is compliant with the World Meteorological Organization’s Guide to Instruments and Methods of Observation (WMO-No. 8), which sets the global standards for the performance, calibration, and deployment of meteorological and air quality instruments
Miri Air Models
Miri Air is available in three configurations, each designed to meet different monitoring needs:
Miri Air Lite is built for community-scale monitoring. It comes with the core sensor package; PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, CO₂, temperature, humidity, pressure, and noise. Making it ideal for smaller deployments or localized projects.
Miri Air Urban is tailored for city and urban environments. In addition to the core sensors, it includes gas monitoring for CO, O₃, and VOC/NOX index, providing a more detailed picture of urban air quality.
Miri Air Pro is the advanced model designed for research, industrial use, and large-scale monitoring. It offers the full sensor suite, including PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, CO₂, CO, NO₂, O₃, SO₂, CH₄, VOCs, HCHO, along with optional weather extensions for solar radiation, precipitation, wind, and soil parameter
From Lagos to Africa: Growing Our Monitoring Network
Miri Air has been fully deployed in Lagos State in partnership with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA)[1], where it continuously monitors air quality and other environmental conditions. We have expanded our coverage network to other countries across Africa.

Who is Miri Air built for?
Miri Air is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders across Africa:
- Governments- Monitor hotspots, enforce standards, and design healthier cities.
- Researchers- Access calibrated, WMO-compliant datasets for climate studies and forecasting
- Industries- Track emissions, ensure compliance, and demonstrate sustainability commitments.
- Public Health Authorities- Issue timely advisories to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
- Citizens- Gain awareness of local air quality, empowering communities to take informed action for their health and environment.
The Miri Platform: Your Gateway to Environmental Intelligence

Key Feature of the Miri Platform
- Visualize in real time- Track live air quality maps, dashboards, and pollution hotspots across cities and regions.
- Forecast with confidence- Access AI-powered nowcasts and short-term forecasts that combine device readings with satellite archives and historical data.
- Stay ahead with alerts- Configure custom thresholds for pollutants, noise, or weather conditions and receive instant notifications when safe limits are breached.
